Fourth Grade Field Trip to ISU

We took our first field trip to ISU last week to watch the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra perform and talk about the different types of instruments for students to look in to once they start fifth or sixth grade. It turned out to be a corporation-wide thing because Tilson Auditorium was eventually filled up with thousands of fourth graders and their teachers. It turned out to be a great experience for the class, especially when the orchestra began the presentation by performing the Star Wars theme

The performance lasted less than an hour, so the fourth grade teachers spent all week brainstorming different things the kids could do for the rest of the day. It turned out that Mrs. D knew some employees that worked at the rec center. This turned out to be great because all fifty-three fourth graders were hopped up on lots of energy.

Both classrooms were split in half. One half went to a second gym and climbed on the rock wall and the second group remained in the main gym. The students in the main gym played tic-tac-toe using hula hoops and bean bags. There's actually a video of how this game is played on Facebook too. After a couple rounds of this game, the group played Knockout without knocking anybody out. In about half an hour, both groups switched so that everyone was able to play the games that the rec center had to offer.
We ate Pizza Hut and Dippin Dots in the Commons and then burned off that intake walking around campus. Mrs. H wanted to head to the Hulman Center to see the Larry Bird Statue before it started raining again . . .

So we did. This was the majority of the students' favorite part of the field trip because for one thing, Larry Bird is a well-known figure of the Terre Haute area, unless you've been living under a rock your entire life. The second reason could partly be because the classes were able to run off their energy. The third reason is because these kids love learning about people and history.

For a class having only one field trip this year, both classes did a good job not being rambunctious and I was able to experience corralling classes around as this is something I'll experience in the near future.
